60 seconds with…Paul Hadfield

< Return to the insights hub

Here at Mizaic, our team of experts is the heartbeat of everything we do. They are what make the digital transformation projects for the country’s NHS Trusts possible, and many of them have learned — and first-hand — experience within the healthcare sector.

You may have read a lot about Paul Hadfield recently, following the recent news of his appointment as Mizaic's software development team lead.

So, in our latest employee spotlight, we spend 60 seconds getting to know him, a little better...

Tell us about your career to date…

I left school and started out as a mechanical engineering apprentice, but switched to IT four years later. I’ve been in the industry for around 30 years now, and have worked for a range of organisations,, including ParentPay, Cyberowl and Schroders.

What attracted you to Mizaic?

Mizaic is a highly innovative company that is playing a leading role in transforming healthcare across the UK, so it’s great to be a part of this. As the organisation continues to grow, I’ve been able to come in and hit the ground running, helping grow the team and begin work on some really exciting projects.

What does a typical day in your role look like?

Working in software brings lots of variation to my day. My role is multifaceted — working on the maintenance and resilience of architecture by implementing user interface evolution, and contributing to ongoing advancements of functionality.

My job is to ensure that Mizaic’s software is continually fit for purpose so that Trusts can achieve their digital transformation goals. This involves a lot of problem-solving, as well as optimising the team’s processes and efficiencies to meet release cycles.

What makes the people at Mizaic stand out for you?

I’ve always liked working in close-knit teams and for tech companies where they are the product, rather than internal teams working on internet applications. Healthtech is also a rewarding industry to be involved in, as every day we see the tangible, positive impact that MediViewer is making.

How is your role helping to revolutionise the healthcare industry?

The medtech industry is an emerging and thriving market that is helping to transform healthcare for the better. In this context, my role definitely feels purposeful and it’s good to know that my work is making the NHS a more efficient and sustainable organisation.

What is your vision for the software team?

I’d like to make the technical team more visible to the outside world so that people understand the work that goes on behind the scenes. I also hope that our team continues to work on technologically interesting projects and switches to a future focus, to ensure that we remain challenged, and that Mizaic remains a leader in the healthtech space.

What’s the best piece of career advice you have been given?

Surprises are almost never a good thing in business. If you’re not going to make a deadline, or something is not looking possible, raise it as early as possible and try to suggest one or more suitable alternatives.

If you could only have three apps on a smartphone, which would you pick?

I would have to be practical and say WhatsApp, Find Friends and email.
